Memories of the Toledo cinema

by admin

Film fans in the south of Glasgow can take a trip back in time, thanks to a new video produced by Tom Harris MP.

“Toledo Memories” is a nostalgic homage to a former southside institution – the Toledo Cinema in Muirend. It features a montage of images captured by the developers of the former cinema in Tom’s Glasgow South constituency. They were given to Tom by Cala Homes in 2001 after he led an unsuccessful campaign to stop the conversion of the historic building into flats.

Tom said: “I’m very grateful to Cala Homes and to Stewart Guthrie, the firm of photographers who have helped preserve these fantastic images for posterity. The photos capture just some of the remarkable detail of the cinema’s interiors. They will, I hope, bring back many memories for southsiders who used the cinema regularly over decades.”

A regular film goer, Tom opposed the loss to the area of the local cinema because he felt it provided a familiar, safe environment for younger movie fans who might not have access to further flung multiplexes. “The Toledo was a place to which parents could feel comfortable sending their children. The Saturday morning club, ‘the ABC Minors’, became an affectionate part of many people’s childhoods. I hope this video will bring back some fond memories.”
